Mercedes E320 diesel wins World Green Car of the Year

2007 bluetec MB e320

European diesels made a good impression at the New York auto show in 2007. The Mercedes-Benz E320 Bluetec took top honors with more votes than the BMW Hydrogen 7 and the Volkswagen Polo BlueMotion. The initial entry list had 14 contenders, including the Saab 9-5 BioPower flex-fuel, Fiat Panda, Citroen C2 Stop & Start and Subaru R1e. The Green Car honor was part of the World Car of the Year award ceremonies held at the New York Auto Show in which the the Lexus LS 460 was given the top honor.

We invite you to join the discussion of diesel vehicles over in the Biodiesel Vehicles section of our forums.

MB will not permit the use of BD in this car, at least not in the U.S.  They will not discuss the use of anything above B5 in their cars in the U.S., even though their customers in Europe regularly use BD.  They will invalidate the warranties of cars that run on BD in the U.S.

A diesel car that can not urn on biodiesel does not deserve any green awards.  It's a farce from one of the most anti-green companies on the planet.

The Moss-Magnussen act says no car manufacturer will warrantee ANY fuel. If bad fuel kills your car, it's the responsibility of whomever sold you that fuel. If you made the fuel yourself, you're responsible for any problems caused by the fuel.

So no car manufacturer can void your warrantee simply because you're running bio. IF the problem you're in for is fuel related AND the fuel is the culprit THEN the dealership isn't responsible for fixing the problem. But your warrantee still isn't void if other things go wrong with the car.

Sounds like the issue maybe politicial. The US will let MB import diesels but the government will add taxes to fuel or just hope for more users of the already high priced petro diesel. However MB must not promote BIO. ? just my opinion.

The lack of biodiesel endorsement by the car makers will change in time. As biodiesel becomes more readily available the auto makers will have to change their tune. Just look at what Cummins said about BD recently.

I believe they are concerned with the quality of the fuel that goes in rather than the type of fuel. Remember, biodiesel in Europe is produced to a higher standard of quality.

I'll say this: I personally would have no problem running ASTM B100 in that vehicle. (Except maybe up north during the dead of winter.) ;-) I'm confident that in time we will find a solution to the gelling problem.

I know about the warranty stuff around this car running bio but can it physically run bio if you wanted?  Will bio affect the Bluetec in any way?

I don't THINK it will. It shouldn't... but BlueTec is a whole new beast.
