    Methenal in MD

I am just getting into making biodiesel and am looking for a larger source of methenal. SO far I have been using the gas treatment HEET for my small test batches but now I need a larger quantity. Thanks for any help.

I get mine from Cordermans Auto Body in Hagerstown. They have 55 gallon drums of methanol for about $135 (+$10 deposit). You have to call a day or two in advance so that they can bring it from storage to the shop. I'll be picking up two more drums from them next week, myself. -Jesse 2003 VW Golf TDI 2003 MB Sprinter 1985 MB 300D Bio/WVO

What's the next smallest size from the 55 gallon drum available and can you get it at the same place?

jmc, how to you transport it? I figure 55 gallon weights about 440 pounds. Pump from their container into one in your car then into 1 at home? I don't have any type of lifting equipment and I don't think just rollin it out of the back of my Suburban off a 3 foot drop is too great for a drum. Basically ready to assemble all my parts. Now I just need KOH and Meth. Where do you get ur KOH from? Chris 94 Chevy SOYburban Turbo Diesel

Just lay a couple of 2x4's on your bumper, the other end on the ground. Lay the drum over and ease it down your 2x4 ramp. Methanol only weighs 6.61 pounds per gallon so a 55 gallon drum weighs less than 400 pounds. Another way would be to put 3 old tires on the ground and just control the fall on the drum. Ive done that many times off the back of a tractor trailer, lol. Good Luck!! Ken

James, Cordermans only sells full 55 gallons drums. I carry the drums in my Sprinter van. They are about 360 pounds, but you can move them around pretty easily. To get them out of the van, I just tilt them and let them slide down onto the ground. The plastic drums can take a lot of abuse. Cordermans has a lift for loading the drums, so you don't have to worry about that part. Ockham, I get my KOH from chemistrystore.com. They have pretty good prices at the 50lb level. Just make sure you print out, fill out, and fax in the waiver form before you order. You only have to send the waiver in once, then they have it on file. -Jesse 2003 VW Golf TDI 2003 MB Sprinter 1985 MB 300D Bio/WVO

I talked to Jackson Fuels (recommended by VP Fuels) and they have a 55gal drum for $199. Seems pricey, but the best deal I've found locally to Baltimore. Actually, the only deal I've found close to Baltimore.

I'm looking to brew myself. Can you tell me where to find chemical protection gloves and apron? I'm also going to start with a kitchen formula and work my way up. Are you in the Baltimore metro area? I saw that there was activity by a Coop in Baltimore but no info since a year ago. Looking to build interest and demand for BioDiesel. Matt Topas 410-608-4318

Home Depot or Lowes should carry the chemical protection gloves.

mtopas, Yeah I'm in downtown Baltimore (Pigtown). Would love to share notes and possibly get a business partner who's interesting in alternative fuels...if I can figure out what the hell I'm doing, I gotta think there's a market for this sort of product that's just not being served around here...coop sounds like an idea to me. Found one WVO source already. What I don't have is containers, a means to heat large quantities of WVO, etc. Open to ideas. Email me if you get a minute, or I'll give you a call soon. Doing a test batch right now.

     Nancy,

I'm in Bel Air and I'm also looking for a large quantity of methanol. I have a 1 tonne Chevy so transporting it won't be a problem and I'm also a powerlifter so moving a full drum won't be an issue, lol!! If the person that posted the location could post the phone number I'd appreciate it.
