Brazil = OPEC of the 21st century?

With all their land and solar resources, plus their jump on the rest of the world with biofuels use, Brazil is well poised to be a major energy exporter for this coming century. Need proof? Read this.

Brazil Seeks to Sell Ethanol to India
Associated Press 08.30.07, 4:25 PM ET

    RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil -

Brazil's state-run oil company on Thursday signed a memorandum of understanding with India's Bharat Petroleum Corp. for the sale of ethanol and biodiesel.

Petroleo Brasileiro SA (nyse: PBR - news - people ), or Petrobras, hopes to export ethanol to India and to other overseas markets, the company said in a statement.

Bharat Petroleum plans to blend ethanol - made from Brazilian-grown sugar cane - into the gasoline it sells. The company also intends to develop opportunities in international ethanol sales, Petrobras said.

Petrobras doesn't produce ethanol itself but has become increasingly active in ethanol exports. In 2008, it plans to export 500 million liters (132 million gallons) of ethanol.

Brazil is the world's biggest exporter of ethanol and its second-largest producer after the United States.

This is due to the fact that Brazil only exported 20% of the target they set for this fiscal year and they are about to face an ethanol glut.

Brazil is basically eating itself  - its land and its poor people, to achieve this dubious position.

It's scary the amount of global warming damage that could be coming between Brazil ripping up the Amazon and China/India becoming more middle class/industrialized.

If I was cynical I'd probably make an observation how Global warming is used as a stick to beat developing nations with.
