    Biofuel compatable furnaces/boilers

    Hi all,

I want to get off petro for home heat and thus want to replace my Monitor kerosene heater with a furnace/boiler system such as that made by Bock. Unfortunately there is little info on what will work in the various systems available, bock or others. I've read a bit about Beckett here, but know nothing about them. From what I’ve read and heard my main concerns with an injection system is a biocompatible fuel pump and perhaps some Jet/air adjustments and of course keeping the fuel warm. I would like to find out what people are using that works before I drop $3500 on a system that chokes on bio. Any real experiences vs. Wanna do’s would be appreciated.

I have been running B50 in an Efel (Belgian) diesel heater for 2 winters and it works fine. B100 tended to burn sooty and leave goop in the burn pot but the B50 works well. I may try upping to B80 this winter.

I live in northern California, have been making bio in both a fuel meister (I hear you groaning) and an appleseed (I hear you cheering) I built with kids at a charter school on a BP grant project. I have been running said fuel in my Ford 6.9L for 3 years (17,000 miles) and my Jetta TDI for a year (15,000 miles). I love minimizing my custom to the petro fascists.

    Plague,

    Check out http://www.biodieselnow.com/forums/thread/22084.aspx

There is very good detailed info on the correct burners and pumps that are working the best to date.

Additionally, I would recommend looking into boilers with large internal ports which are easy to clean as Biodiesel burning will require more frequent cleanings and tend to form a hard glassy deposit which could potentially ruin a boiler jacket which will require replacement. Unless you are able to burn clean fuel in a perfectly adjusted boiler set up specifically for Bio D combustion- there will be potentilally damaging deposits to deal with. I use a Crown Freeport- it has a hinged access door and large ports for easy cleaning. I burn unwashed Bio 100 but I have to clean the boiler more often as a result.
