Re: Water blended INTO liquid fuels
vainolaiho:
Some analogy can be seen avoiding discussion upon the matter discussed here now - using water as a component in liquid fuels.
I would like to see a discussion on water blended INTO liquid fuels. But water AS a fuel sux and is only worthy of jokes.
So... what do I do... dump a few gallons of water into my diesel tank and see what happens?
EDIT; or... should I do it the natural green way... open my gas tank cover and let mother nature do the work? I always wondered what ppl were doing driving around with the tanks open...

Re: Water blended INTO liquid fuels
Honestly back in the 70's there was a system that used sonics in the gas tank to agitate the mix. I forget what the down fall was but I seem to rememebr it was ok for a modified stationary generator. Something like 3% water and 1% power loss.

Re: Water blended INTO liquid fuels
In 1997 I got a fax from the States. It was a copy of an article from USA-today telling about an invention. Water could be mixed up to 45 % with dieselfuel with an emulcant. The article told that Caterpillar had bought the patent. Since then I have not heard anything about the matter.
As far as I remember the date of the issue was Febr. 13th 1997.
Sorry - here comes the right date:
"Water-based fuel: Clean, cheap, around the corner", USA Today, February 12, 1996, p.2A. 28.3c Erich Schunter, "Alternative Fuel", ...

Re: Water blended INTO liquid fuels
I do not know about anyone else
but every time I left my ride on mower out in the rain and water would always get in the fuel tank (at least 100 times), it would initially start but then stopped within 5 minutes and would not restart. I would then have to remove the fuel tank and drain all of the water and remove the fuel filter and blow out all the water and remove the float bowl from the carburator and empty all the water before it would start again.
I eventually formed a mental rule that Water in the fuel was a bad thing and should be avoided

Re: Water blended INTO liquid fuels
Here is a kwik link to some info:
www.energy.wsu.edu/documents/renewables/PuriNoxl.pdf
This is not very much & is for finished fuel.
When I was a kid, one of my uncle told me that in the Battle of the Bulge the Germans carried an emulcant with them. It was used to blend 5 gal of US gasoline, 1 gal water, 1 qt motor oil for use in there diesel engine. I don't know what the emulcant was. As a guess I'd say it was an alchohal.
Off to solve problems that can be solved yet today.

Sunday,
There is sonic emulsifier article in the June 17, 1974 Newsweek.

Re: Water blended INTO liquid fuels
Here are some reasons why one would/wouldn't want to do it. UW-Madison/DaimlerChrysler report.

Short summary is cutting pollution.

One thing puzzles me: What happened to the patent ?
The fax I got on heat sensitive paper is not readable any more and the link to the article does not work.
Can somebody dig the article above from the archives ?

What about this:
Todd Cory wrote:

For the latest information about A-21, please see A-21 Fuel--Half
Water, of Half Vapor? in the August issue of BWZ.
In the arid state of Nevada, excitement is growing over a new
alternative fuel source made, of all things, from water! Clean-
burning, water-based A-21 fuel, the brainchild of Reno inventor
Rudolph Gunnerman, was recently classified by the Nevada Division of
Environmental Protection as a recognized clean alternative fuel,
clearing the way for commercial uses of the fuel in Nevada.
A-21, for "Advanced Fuels Technology for the 21st Century," is a
stable emulsion, or mixture, of water and petroleum-based naphtha,
with trace amounts of bonding and winterizing agents. Water comprises
up to 55% of the total fuel volume, with the remainder consisting
mostly of naphtha, a petroleum product from the earliest stages of
the refinery process. Water and petroleum products normally don't
mix, but Gunnerman invented an emulsifier that allows the two
substances to be blended together into a milky liquid that can be
used to run both gasoline and diesel engines with only minor
modifications.

My ques is that Mr. Gunnerman has learned about Rudolf Diesel's story: It is better to be rich and alive than the opposite.
