Using biodiesel in a 48cc 2 stroke bicycle engine

    Hi,

Is anyone else running biodiesel in a small 2 stroke engine ?

    What blend ?

    Thanks, Steve

Testing using 30% biodiesel,  70% methanol.

A little smoke. It has been running 2 hours. How long will it run ?

    In a gasoline engine?

    Hi old300D,

Yes,  I  might have to shut it down tonight.  it is loud !    I am going to try 20/80 when it runs out and see if I can get it not to smoke at all.

    Thanks, Steve

Hi Natescape,  That is a 2 stroke blower that I pulled out of the trash !

The carb bolts were loose and it would not start. Now it is on the web ! :)

I read an old thread on this forum that was talking about using biodiesel in a 2 stroke.

    http://www.biodieselnow.com/forums/t/3568.aspx?PageIndex=1

    2 stroke biodiesel tests underway !  :)

    Thanks, Steve

Way less smoke with 20/80.  Almost no smoke.  Engine is running very smooth and cool.  I will shut it down tonight and start it up in the morning and run it all day !

If this works then I will be able to run biodiesel in my 2 stroke bicycle motor !  :)

Why 80% methanol, is that not just making the fuel a whole lot more expensive than if you used normal pump gasoline?

    Hi Fuzznag,

My 2 stroke bicycle gets up to 100 MPG and I don't drive it that much. :)

You have to mix oil with the gas anyway. I am hoping the biodiesel will replace the oil without problems.

The bicycle engine has a compression ratio of about 6 to 1.

Methanol , high octane racing gas , mixed with high flashpoint high cetane biodiesel. That is the blend I am using.  Too much biodiesel and it smokes.

    methanol $2.75  gas  $3.?? and rising !

I have plenty of methanol right now so I am testing with that.

If this works E-85 blended with biodiesel tests next !

     Thanks, Steve

    P.S.  I like the smell ! :)

I'm thinking biodiesel/methanol pollutes a bit less than gasoline mixed with 2 stroke oil.  Way to go.

Is it one of those add on engines? If so, which brand?

If you run across an old Lohmann bicycle engine(semi-diesel & all fuel), please let me know. There was also a similar Danish built one,  30s-50s, but the name of it escapes me now.

With properly defining the problem, open minds & a little work the liq fuel situation will get solved.

    Nice low dollar testing.

Thanks,  I  ran the blower for 8 hours .  It only stopped to refuel.    After 4 hours I went to 10% biodiesel and 90% methanol.

I checked the spark plug and it was a little gray.   That means it is running lean.

The next tests will be with an ethanol blend and biodiesel.

I don't suggest using methanol because some of it comes out unburned in a 2 stroke.  I think ethanol is better.

    Thanks, Steve

It is a pico wingdinger ? made in China , bought on eBay. :)

I have never even heard of a Lohmann bicycle engine.  I have now !

Where and how are you getting methanol for $2.75 per gallon?

Wow, that's almost $1.00 per gallon cheaper than methanol from my local drag strip, the cheapest around.  We are sitting at $3.64 right now.

    Hi old300D,

Ouch !   I hope the truck place selling it doesn't find that out !

They have a tanker in back and when it is empty I guess $3.?? is what I will be paying.

It is good methanol for making biodiesel.

Diesel is going for over 4 dollars a gallon at some places.

    Thanks, Steve
