Homebrewers beware -- 'Greasy' crime sends man to jail
'Greasy' crime sends man to jail
An
Illinois man was booked into Santa Clara County Jail late Tuesday
afternoon when he was allegedly spotted removing the grease from the
grease trap at a local restaurant, reportedly to convert into biodiesel
fuel.
David Richardson, 49, was spotted by the owner of San Jose
Tallow, Mark Rosenzweig, who was in the area because he was aware that
the grease theft had been occurring in the area, according to Morgan
Hill police Cmdr. David Swing.
Rosenzweig saw Richardson in
the area of a business he has a contract with in a three-axle, 5,000
gallon truck similar to the kinds used to empty out porta-potties, and
followed Richardson to the Burger King restaurant on Monterey Road.
There he watched Richardson siphon the inedible grease into his truck.
Police
were called at approximately 2:40 p.m. by the manager of the Burger
King, who had approached Richardson and was handed a blank service
contract by him.
Rosenzweig also phoned when he reportedly saw
Richardson using a hose and a pump on the truck to remove the grease
from an outside outlet.
"The tank of the truck was half-full," Swing said, "so it appears that he may have been taking grease from other places."

Yeah, that guy was hitting everything that was not locked down . Making biodiesel and sending it to Europe ? ? ?
Homebrewers better lock their stuff up. We got hit last week. Tony made a real nice locking lid so it won't happen again.
That guy in the picture is not a homebrewer. He is one of the cut throat big brewers ! ! !
Our drum is now locked up with a camera on it ! ! !

Re: Homebrewers beware -- 'Greasy' crime sends man to jail
Alot of people read this stuff that don't make or use biodiesel.
On the other forum people will ask how to make biodiesel .
Someone will suggest the CBT and the appleseed.
Then someone will post about how they can blow up.
Then flamefest.
Do people think homebrewers steal other peoples oil then go to a secret location and disregard the electrical code rules and make biodiesel in an electric water heater ?
Homebrewers need to present a better front ! People might get the wrong ideas about us ! ! !

So you are suggesting homebrewers not discuss making biodiesel? Or everyone should make bio without power? I'd like to see someone try to heat and pump my 200 gallon processor without electric power......(or maybe not)

Re: Homebrewers beware -- 'Greasy' crime sends man to jail
Hi old300D,
I don't want to tell anyone what to do. I am suggesting that if people are going to make biodiesel in electric water heaters using cheap HF pumps then they might want to not post on the internet about it ! ! !
Any electrician that reads or sees that will not be impressed ! I can read and understand the electrical code book from start to finish. If anyone has any problems understanding any part of it , ask me.
Thanks, Steve

That is nonsense. My HF pump has lasted for 4 years and almost 1500 gallons of fuel. It is UL and CSA listed, and I will buy another. It's a non-sparking induction motor, the pump is physically separated from it -- it is safe. You criticize this, which make up the majority of processors, and offer no alternative save a manual processor that offers many of the same hazards inherent in making biodiesel -- methanol and lye.

Re: Homebrewers beware -- 'Greasy' crime sends man to jail
I am an electrician. What can I say ? I can't suggest anyone do anything that is against the electrical code.
The BioPro has explosion proof motors. It will meet the electrical code. That is a big reason I suggest using them.
The people that designed them went by the rules.
I would not call the electrical code nonsense. And I would not say it does not apply !

If you understand the electrical code rules and can design a setup that will meet the electrical code then show it on the internet. If not then don't bother.

I didn't call the electrical code nonsense. I have not advocated anyone violate electrical codes, nor do I do it myself. As I already stated, the HF pump is electrically approved for North America. Maybe you can support your position that an appleseed, or a HF pump violates electrical codes -- you made the claim -- support it. That's what I'm calling nonsense.

I showed it in a thread on infopop. No one challenged it. I explained in detail.
I spent much time doing the research. Search infopop. I did not delete it !
Are you an electrician or E.T. ?

I agree with this, thank you. I'm glad I don't use electrical heating elements in my reactor. I do, of course use them in my steel wash tanks, just like an electric water heater would be wired. You may argue that the pumps are not adequate, but I think I have made my case for the HF pump in that there is no way for a single fault in the pump to ignite the contents of what is being pumped. And because you asked, I work as an electrical engineer and have a BSEE degree. I suppose this is a bit off topic regarding grease thieves (may they reap what they sow). I apologize for the hijack.

The problem is not everyone is a BSEE that reads this stuff !

As I already stated, the HF pump is electrically approved for North America.
That may or may not get you anywhere, but first things first: is where you're using it a Classified or Unclassified location? Depending on a typical setup, it could be argued that it's a Class I, Div 2 location (area wher e in the case of an abnormal event, explosive gasses could be present.) If so, then just looking for a UL, CSA or other agency mark on a piece of electrial equipment isn't enough, you have to find out what it was certified for. You can do that by visiting the web site of the certifing agency and searching for the manufacturer name. But in a nutshell, equipment that has been certified for non-hazardous locations isn't ok for use in hazardous/classified locations.
