Re: Mechanical problems associated with biodiesel usage

My UPS driver was just here 5 min ago and I was talking to him about biodiesel. His UPS truck is a Mecedes Benz powered Freightliner model year 2007. He said that UPS does not use biodiesel because Mercedes Benz has a directive that prohibits the use of biodiesel in their vehicles! Also, the local Speedishuttle airport shuttle has 20 MB Sprinter vans in operation in Hawaii. They were an original supporter and user of biodiesel, but now 3 years and $175,000 in repairs later they are not using it. Innuendo, theories, etc has nothing to do with this discussion. Hard facts and realism will get us the results we all want.

Every year there is a new diesel vehicle model released, biodiesel is NEVER recommended, yet here we are burning B100 in every one of them for thousands of miles with no documented issues or failures attributed to biodiesel in any percentage (not crap, ASTM fuel mind you).  The forums are full of incidents where biodiesel users have an issue of one kind or another and get fleeced by unscrupulous dealers for repairs they don't need just because they mention or advertise biodiesel.  I don't want to hear about that, let's see some concrete documentation of failures directly attibuted to biodiesel supported with facts.

For about $2500 or so you can buy a 240D or 300D  or a Ford IDI truck. Those motors will burn biodiesel just fine.

Stop by the Ford dealer and look at new diesel trucks.  Tell him you might buy one when they can build one as good as the old ones.  Smile

As I said before spend $2-5000 on an old diesel and experiment with the biodiesel, but don't plunk down $50k on a new diesel and exect to use biodiesel without some kind of problem. In a matter of time I think biodiesel problems will be solved and then the price of these new diesels will skyrocket! Good investment tip: buy old diesels and as much farm land as you can!!

Again, there are many many NEW vehicles running B100 without any issues.  CRDs, TDIs, Cummins, Duramaxes, Powerstrokes.  There may be issues with biodiesel in some of the newer exhaust catalysts, but nothing's conclusive yet.  You continue to rail against biodiesel, but offer no basis for your convictions.  That's not credible to me.
