Is there such thing as a small shop selling BioDiesel legally? And around St Louis?

Like everyone else, I'm looking to pay less. I saw $4.19 at the pump this morning.  I've got a SWEET '97 Ram 2500 that burns nothing but BioDiesel just not the "home brewed" stuff. It sounds possible to me that some guys could be cooking their own and could sell it legally if they pay taxes. I might be WAY wrong on this but thats what I've understood from this forum so far. So I thought I'd ask:

    A) Is it legal yet to both make it and sell it?

    if so

    B) Is anybody doing it around the St Louis area ?

    vogues69,

As per your question on legality.  To my understanding it is only legal to sell fuel that meets ASTM D6751 standards for quality.  If this is feasible through a "home brew" operation is a question of how or what you use to produce the fuel.  Also, as the government likes to get there piece, your tax contribution from the fuel you do manufacure and sell would keep you out of trouble with the Feds.

     Cheers

join a brewing coop.  Check out the St. Louis biodiesel folks.  As you say, homebrew biodiesel is legal so long as you pay taxes.  As to selling it, no.  But if you are paying for the consumables that go into making it... Wink

You can make high quality fuel at home- it just takes some experimentation and help from the online community.  www.biodieselcommunity.com and www.girlmark.com

This is interesting: Check out this link

    http://www.epa.gov/oms/renewablefuels/420b07019.pdf

This is an EPA Document which states

"Biodiesel is registered with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as a motor vehicle diesel fuel and motor vehicle diesel fuel additive. It is registered for use at any blend level up to B100 in highway diesel vehicles. Biodiesel, as discussed in this document, does not include renewable diesel. Renewable diesel is a non-ester based diesel blend derived from non-petroleum resources, such as plant oil or animal fats or wastes. Because renewable diesel is processed in a refinery along with petroleum stocks, it becomes indistinguishable from petroleum diesel, and does not need to be blended downstream of the refinery.

Neat vegetable oils and recycled greases (also called waste cooking oil or yellow grease) that have not been processed into mono-alkyl esters are not biodiesel. These raw oils, used as fuel extenders or fuel substitutes, are not registered with EPA and are not legal to use as a motor vehicle fuel. Furthermore, cooking oil is physically and chemically different than diesel fuel and its use in conventional engines will generally cause negative effects on emissions and engine durability.

Because of the potential for increased emissions, it is considered unlawful tampering to convert a vehicle designed for diesel fuel to operate on waste oil without EPA certification. To date, EPA has not certified any conversions for waste oils. Even with EPA certification, conversions may violate the terms of the vehicle warranty. For more information on the certification process, please visit EPA's Web site at: www.epa.gov/otaq/cert/dearmfr/cisd0602.pdf (22 pp, 152 K, About

According to this EPA document - conversion of Fryer grease into BioDiesel is illegal! Somebody help me out....

Ok... I think this is just saying that "raw oil" is not biodiesel unless it is refined or processed. Agree?

Hi Scott. Welcome to the site. I'm pretty sure they're referring to running WVO with a two-tank system or blended with diesel fuel, not referencing biodiesel. I think.
