First part of Jetta test is accomplished - 5000 miles with canola oil 30% in the tank. No bigger problems.

Chasing problems: Next step is to mix unestherized , purified VVO at the same level.

The wvo-test stopped after 2000 miles ( I am happy that the motor still runs smoothly). New test started with freshly pressed organic canola oil. at reading 616600 kms.

It started exactly 15 years ago - using mustard seed oil as dieselfuel in our field tractor.

Exactly 10 years ago the fuel was changed to my old Mercedes:

     http://personal.inet.fi/koti/v.laiho.konsulttitsto/kuvat/pavaihto22698.JPG

    changing to mustard seed oil

With mustard seed oil I run Mercedes 50 000 miles and changed to canola oil. It took only 10 000 kilometers and the motor was broken( the reason was not canola oil but the long history of the dieselmotor - almost 1 000 000 kms )

    Re: Mustard seed oil

    HelloVaino,

My name is Roy Vaino Peltonen. I am 59yrs of age and I am Canadian born. My father was Finnish but I never learned the language except for a few choice words and I can count to 5. I now live on a small 20 acre property on the east coast of Australia halfway between Sydney and Brisbane. It is inland on the great Divide about 1200 metres above sea level.

I was very impressed about what you are doing with SVO and I'm doing research into growing Rape seed for the oil and feed byproduct for anamals

I looked at some of your stuff and saw that you used a screw press to extract the oil from the mustard seed. I was wondering if you have contacts for purchasing one of these presses at a reasonable price ? Also do you dry the byproduct to feed stock ? I am currently driving a 4.5 litre Toyota Landcruiser Wagon which is petrol driven and it is costing too much to run and we are feeling the effect. I was looking at the V/W JettaTDI 2 litre  diesel and this looks like a good vehicle.  Do you run straight SVO (straight vegetable oil) in your diesel ? Its cool here and I may have to have a heater in the fuel tank to keep it from solidifying as we get frosts here every night and the occassional snowfall during winter. I also think. it is wise to start and run on regular diesel until everything warms up. Anyway it is nice talking to you and maybe one day I will be able to visit my fathers homeland. You look a very nice family man and it is to your credit.  Thank you for reading this and maybe I will hear from you. bye for now  , Roy

    Hello Roy

    and thanks for calling.

You are privileged to live in Australia. They have developed a mustard species, that can be used as human vegetable oil raw material. A company Yandilla is specialized to produce various mustard seed oils mainly for human consumption. Steven Hobbs is a farmer who grows mustard for bio-diesel and has experience and a small oilpress on that field. Steven visited my farm 4 years ago and so are you also wellcome to do.

But first, contact Steven and the company Yandilla - they may have some older but good mills for reasonable price. If I send a press to you for nothing the costs may anyway become quite high.

About my tests; I have tried to asses the risk for a farmer who is compelled to use raw unestherized mustard seed oil during some crisis ( war etc. )

It is cool even cold here in Finland, but  minus 15 degrees Centigrade is still possible to run a car in my system.

What part of Finland was your father's home region ? Please come and see this nice country and visit my farm too !

    Vaino

    Hi Roy,

I have a contact here in Brisvegas that you may be able to use if you still need a screw press. Send me a PM if you want to follow through.

Slippery Small steps taken one at a time.

    Hello Vaino

Thank you for replying and thank you also for your invitation to visit your farm. If I ever get the opportunity I will certainly come and visit you. I have a friend who lives close by who knows of someone local who owns a press. We will try and see if he will press some rape seed so we can see how things work. Then maybe we will plant and harvest our own. My property is only 10 acres arable so I don't know how much seed it will produce. I have a friend who has a harvester so we'll see what happens. We may even lease some land to grow the crop.

I will be looking for an older diesel powered vehicle which I can try and run SVO. I will certainly try and contact Steven . The name Yandilla sounds familiar to me , it may be close to where we live.

I'm not exactly sure of what region my father comes from but I have done some research and I may be able to find it. My father came to Canada and had his own mechanics work shop in Sudbury. When the Russians were invading Finland he went back to defend his country. He was on the skis and was shot a couple of times but not serious. He then returned to Canada , met my mother and I was brought onto the planet. I'm 59 now , 60 in Feb and they are both resting. I would like to return him to Finland one day as he loved his country. So maybe I will see you. Thanks again for your help

    Roy

Ten years ago I had the pleasure to tell about our experiment in Turku technical university laboratory at the SAE meeting in San Francisco. My paper is presented in that book SAE - 1391 starting at page 149. The lesson is based on the BsSc-thesis of Timo Hytonen. The abstracts  of the thesis can be seen:
