If my math is right, 55 gallons of methanol should weigh about 340 pounds. The biodiesel fuel in CT seems to sell at a bit of a premium over regular diesel, maybe 20 cents a gallon - not really sure and I don't think it was higher than B20.
I have only begun to collect - I am rather new to this, but of the samples I have collected the ones from a Chinese restaurant look the best. I have not yet titrated any, but one of my samples look like cake batter. I think the one that looks like cake batter is mostly breading for a bar fryer and not much oil. Not sure, thought I'd try filtering that one a little first.
Got a delay in the methanol delivery. The guy whose shop we deliver to is moving to a new shop right now. He's expecting to be in his new place in a week and sometime after that will be ready to take a delivery. If it drags on more that a couple weeks, I'm going to look for a different facility to unload at. So those of you looking to get in on this group buy, sit tight if you can and I will post again in a couple weeks.

DT, Do you have a dollar figure for a drum? How many barrels do you have committed?
R
I don't have prices yet. I just called New England Racing Fuels and they are at $258 for a 50 gallon barrel. Last time I put together a group order NERF was at about $250 and we got 55 gallon barrels for under $200 with our bulk company, $180 comes to mind but I can't remember for sure.
We have 6 barrels from this list. Grant usually gets three himself so we are somewhere around 9. That is if this thing goes through. Got to wait until Grant gets settled a bit before I pester him again. But I'm running low and the oil is piling up so I can't wait too long.
We're back in business. Pick up is now in New Britain instead of Berlin. Here's the specs:
methanol - 55 gallon drum - $210 plus a $20 deposit on the barrel refundable if returned in good condition
NaOH - 50 pound bag - $75
KOH - 50 pound bag - $90
We have a forklift at the site and can load it onto your truck. Please respond ASAP as we are trying to arrange delivery sometime early next week.
2.49 a gallon sounds great. I'd definately get a barrel at that price. DT please post if this vendor works.
Thanks for all the footwork in trying to get this done.
rlindey - Contact me offline and we can talk by phone. dunemandt@yahoo.com.
Last call on getting in on the Methanol/caustic group order. Price is 2.49 per gallon for a 55 gallon drum. NaOH and KOH are also available in bulk. I need a commitment by Monday.
rlindey - If you want in on this order, you MUST contact me today. Order goes through tomorrow morning. You said you want in but I need to speak with you to make that happen.
rlindey, Please call me ASAP. I don't have your phone number. This order is going through pronto and I need your information.
Hi, I'm new to this forum and live in New London. I was curious to where you buy your methanol from and at what price.
Thank You,
Jesse.
I live in connecticut and get my methanol from Connecticut Racing Fuels 860-673-9555
$258 per barrel. But if there is any interest in another group buy at a cheaper cost, I would be in. Also, if anyone has any good ideas for methanol recovery/condenser assemblies and procedures, I would like to talk about that as well.
Thanks,
Tony
I couldn't wait, I had to buy some. I bought one drum, I could get more if I got a good price maybe. What did the last buy cost?
I hooked up a condenser coil today to my 55gal drum processor, a little heat, and about 1psi of air pressure into the bottom of the barrel for agitation, and I think it works. Is there a thread about methanol recovery? I'm not sure how to see if my methanol is just that and not too much water, if I keep the temp around 165 F I shouldn't get too much water (I hope).
There may be a methanol recovery thread here, but I am unsure. There is a whole forum on methanol recovery over at biodiesel.infopop.cc
To find out the purity of your methanol, but an alcoholmeter. I got one on ebay for less than 15 bucks, shipped. Make sure you get one for high alcohol content spirits, not the one for beer and wine making.
I think the drum price last time around was $165 plus a barrel deposit that can be refunded..... The price of methanol changes daily, I have no idea what it is right now. Where did you get a barrel from, and what did you pay?
I haven't been on the boards in a while. Notice there is still interest in purchasing bulk methanol and caustic. I'm putting together a fall order in the next couple weeks. If you are interested, let me know. Don't have pricing yet but we usually get the best deal around. Minimum sizes: methanol - 55 gallons, caustic - 50# bag. Delivery is in New Britain.
