Where to get biodiesel in New Jersey and New York

Please use this forum to list locations biodiesel can be bought. If you have other info, such as hours, price, address, web site, etc, please also list it. There are a pair of fairly comprehensive lists here: http://www.biodiesel.org/buyingbiodiesel/retailfuelingsites/default.shtm and http://afdcmap.nrel.gov/locator/LocatePane.asp

dharmagirl108; I assume your Mini Bus has a diesel engine. If so, no modifications are necessary to run B20, which is available in the Bronx. If you want to run B100, there are still no modifications required if it is high quality (all the residual alcohol removed); homemade B100 with incomplete washing/vacuum removal of alcohol will result in the deterioration of rubber hoses and seals--which should be replaced with viton. ____________________ Mahalo and Aloha, S. Re: Where to get biodiesel in New Jersey and New York

I just made my first purchase of Bio Diesel from Taylor Oil in Somerville, NJ. This location is only selling in sealed 5 gallon non-returnable pails at the moment, which increases the cost. But it is a reasonable way to get started with bioD. A nice feature is the chemical analysis and lot code pasted on the side of the pails, with 15 parameters. For my batch these included Cetane (52.7), Cloudpoint (0 degrees C), total glycerine (0.1129%, which I assume is a residual), Flashpoint (153 degrees C), and so on. The name of the Taylor Oil chemist is included, so they appear to be serious about quality. I plan to reuse these stackable plastic pails the next time, when I purchase in bulk (currently about 25% cheaper) at the Eddystone PA location, or somewhere else. Taylor's number in Somerville is 908 725 7737, address is 77 Second Street, 08876. If you come from Bridge street (off US 206) make sure you go past the yard to the building with the Taylor sign, dispatch is around back. I think it is an 8 to 5 kinda place, not sure exactly. I hear the Eddystone PA location is not marked, but I haven't been there yet: 610 876 1783 if you want to try them. I once tried emailing these guys and never got a response, but they answer the phone. When I see how well it works to burn bioD in my 1978 Mercedes, I'll start wondering about getting the cost down. Meanwhile I'm happy to be buying from Farmer John instead of the oil guys, even if it costs a bit more.

Hi, I am new to biodiesel. I would like to find a place close to New Rochelle, New York where I can purchase it and try it out. This way I can see if it's right for me before I start investing in equipment to make it myself. I'd appreciate any suggestions you have. Thanks.

The fuel from Taylor worked out great, I used it all and more on a 2500 mile road trip. I'm getting more from Taylor in PA, where they sell in bulk at $4 a gallon, taxes paid and ASTM certified. I find the pails useful but I have enough to store what I need for now. The cost of the pail appears to add $5 to a 5 gallon purchase, a bit less thanw what a fuel can costs at Lowes. I paid a bit less in Pittsburgh pumping into the car, and a lot less in Minneapolis but had to pump into the pails and then pour into the car.

Has anyone found any sources on Long Island? I'm a boater who has used BD for the last few years in my inboard diesel. Since it's a sail boat, I don't use a lot. Got a 55 gals delivered a few years ago and now what to just get 25-35 gallons to fill my tank for this season. I know about Enviormental Alternatives on Newark, but it's a little out of my way. Like their price though. $3.25 a gallon beats what I pay at the marina for the petro-diesel.

is there anything in Ithaca? I would think that would be the hotbed, but the biodiesel.org site doesn't mention it.

I found someone in your area that sells WVO you can call him to see if he might have a contact for biodiesel. Here is his web page. http://www.liquidsolar.org/index.html Filtered vegetable oil>>>>>>>> $1.70/gallon. This includes 24.4 cents federal road tax (which is required by law). Please call Mark Wienand at 607.539.1102 for more information. Claude

I drive a 2005 Jetta tdi, and I live in Harrington Park, NJ - 07640 - not far from NYC. Are there any sources in Bergen County, NJ or Rockland or Westchester, NY? If not, I would love to start my own production set up - maybe a small cooperative for the NY metro area. I plan to approach my local service station and ask if he can provide space and a little technical know how. Does anyone want to join a coop in the NY metro area? Dana

The original post by netscape has no listings for NJ for the below Website:(http://www.biodiesel.org/buyingbiodiesel/retailfuelingsites/default.shtm) I'm planning on small-scale production (200-300gallons per week) from WVO in the near future for the Lakewood/Toms River area. Production materials are pending.

Re: Where to get biodiesel in New Jersey and New York

I lost a battle recently where I tried to convince ownership to switch to biodiesel for our emergency generators. After I thought about it for a bit. They were probably right. Here are the details, let me know what you all think. - My company wants to be ISO 14001 compliant. - I looked in biodiesel and pushed for it until other factors came to light. First these are emergency generators. If biodiesel fuel is unstable and we don't use large amounts over a short period of time, we run the risk of the biodiesel breaking down. - In the winter, if we have an emergency and the generators start up. Will the additional cranking time associated with biodiesel in cold weather be such that it will interfere with the generators parallelling to the bus. - H.O. Penn won't guarantee our contract unless we use only 5% biodiesel or we convert the engines to handle 20%. - But perhaps the biggest problem is its availablity. If there is a power failure and I need to run the generators for an extended period of time, what guarantee do i have that biodiesel fuel will be available to top off the tanks? Thinking about it another way, if I run low on biodiesel and refill with normal diesel fuel (low sulfur), will that have an impact on the engine's performance, if biodiesel was in it before. - We have issues with taking risks such as these because the generators do not just support life safety systems; but, critical systems as well for our data center. Being a bank, they don't want to take any chances. Thanks, Ollie "Sometimes you're the windshield. Sometimes, you're the bug."
