Aviation history was made in Reno, Nevada last month with the first jet flight powered by 100 percent biodiesel fuel.
Rudi Wiedemann of Biodiesel Solutions said, "We're pioneering aviation on renewable fuel. How cool is that."
The flight was a step toward new possibilities for renewable energy in aviation.
"This is ASTM quality biodiesel. That means this is pure enough and
clean enough that I can reach in here and drink it," said Wiedemann
Green Flight International conducted the test flight and has scheduled the first B100-powered transcontinental jet flight.
The company’s BioJet, a retired Czech L-29 military aircraft, will fly
in late November 2007 from an undisclosed location in California to Florida.
They hope this will be the first of many record-breaking events using alternatives to petroleum-based fuels.
The founder of Greenflight International said the goal of the test
flights is not to replace petroleum-based fuel completely, but to
implement biofuel into mainstream transportation systems.
"I don't have all the answers. I don't need all the answers right now. All I have to do is solve the problems one at a time. More importantly, I won't be doing it by myself."-- Sean O'Hanlon
