Never even remotely thought about this. I think it would more come down to "smarts", no one is regulating home-brew biodiesel (unless someone complains). Probably should be asking about safety concerns.

The better question is have you checked local regulations and your homeowners policy? Like call the fire marshal and see what he thinks and what requirements must be meet. Most severly frown and get real grumpy about making your own fuel without permits and zoning issues. If they catch you making it without a permit, they will take everything, fine you, and report you to your insurance company and they will cancel your policy.

    Re: Age Limit

There are no age limits for making biodiesel. A 5 year old could, conceivably.

No age limit, but be safe... the transesterfication process produces toxic fumes that can potentially be fatal.

I thought the question was how long the BD or WVO should be allowed to sit around!

I think purchasing the materials, especially methanol, since it's harder to mail order, could be a little tricky for a minor.  I personally wouldn't recommend mixing the methoxide to anyone who was not an adult, but I could see allowing a teenager to perform the Dr. Pepper version in a chem lab, if well supervised and only the instructor handled the methoxide.

Seems like purchasing federally regulated chemicals would be prohibited for minors, but so are lots of other things that teens purchase for less useful purposes ;)

It then boils down to what age would you be willing to put HazMat into their hands ? Some teenagers are responsible and ccan assimilate the necessary safety protocols, others need a lifetime. I would not even conceive of getting anyone under 14 involved and even at that age it would be on a case by case judgement, and never ever without direct supervision. The liability (moral and legal) in case of accident is just too big to not take extra precautions.

No reason they cannot be included in the process slowly though; start by learning to collect, filter and dewater the oil, then move up tp heating it and so on, so that by the time processing is introduced they will have become familiar with it from watching you do it.

    Re: Age Limit

I started in September, just turned 18 about 2 weeks ago.  The only issue is buying NaOH, which you have to be 18 to do, I'm not sure about KOH, but I think it might be the same for that too.  I have been able to buy methanol the whole time.

Where are you from and where are you buying methanol? The only methanol I can find is Heet gas-line antifreeze and that is regulated.
