    Home Algae Project?

    Hello,

I'v been more or less a spectator here in this forum. I am very interested in alternative fuels and have been pondering a small scale project using cheap materials to try and grow algae and with any luck maybe produce oil (on a small scale of course, just as a hobby) from it. I dont know much about what strains to use(I live in PA by the way), what can survive around here, what produces etc. Nor do i know much about what system to grow it in. Could i very simply just seed a small pond with algae and dig out algae as it grows? Is there a simple way to make an effective photobioreactor? Any tips for my situation would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

By the way, if I was able to obtain oil from algae, could I use it for home heating oil? Are there any special processes to make it viable for home heating use?
